I lost all respect for the Nobel Committee and its peace prize when it rewarded PLO Leader Yasser Arafat in 1994 for a lifetime of terrorism. Since then, it has become nothing more than a political statement that has nothing to do with the promotion of peace. But with today's awarding of the prize to President Barack Obama it has diminished its relevance even further.

As election day dawns in Afghanistan the worldwide interest is not really on whether President Hamid Karzai will win re-election over his main challenger, former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah. The main focus is on whether the election will be marred by Taliban violence and if the Afghan people will have the courage to go to the polls.
