With the conclusion of the Ames straw poll, an Iowa institution that is usually less about the GOP nomination and more about filling time during a slow August news cycle, it's time for Republican primary voters to get serious about supporting the candidate of their choice. But can they even begin to make that choice if some might-be candidates will not fully commit to either running or not running?

In May of 1980 Mount St. Helens erupted, The Empire Strikes Back premiered, the arcade game Pac-Man was released and it was the last time US consumer confidence was as low as it is today. The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan preliminary index of consumer sentiment was projected to dip slightly from 63.7 to 62 but it has plummeted to 54.9 - a level not seen since late in the term of President Jimmy Carter.

At a fundraiser yesterday, Former Massachusetts Governor and current contender for the GOP presidential nomination Mitt Romney said his short list for the Vice President is "[Virginia Governor Bob] McDonnell, Governor [Chris] Christie of New Jersey and [Senator] Marco Rubio of Florida." Obviously Mr. Romney is trying to boost the appeal of his candidacy with the many conservatives who find his record lacking, but this premature discussion of a running mate might have the opposite effect.
