Bye Bye Barney
By Carole on Nov 28, 2011
In January of 2010, then-Senators Christopher Dodd (D-Connecticut) and Byron Dorgan (D-North Dakota) announced they would not be seeking re-election that year. The New York Times reported on the sudden retirements saying they "signaled that President Obama is facing a perilous political environment that could hold major implications for this year's midterm elections and his own agenda." We now refer to those major implications as what Mr. Obama himself called the "shellacking" of his party in those elections. Does today's announcement that 16-term Congressman Barney Frank (D-Massachusetts) will not seek re-election send a similar signal about 2012?
Byrd's Senate Seat Is In Play
By Carole on Jul 19, 2010
West Virginia's state legislature has approved a plan to hold a special election to fill the seat of the late US Senator Robert Byrd (D-West Virginia). Governor Joe Manchin (D), who is likely to be one of the candidates in that special election, signed the measure after a compromise was worked out by state lawmakers. The primary election will be held on August 28 and the vote for Senator Byrd's successor will take place as part of the congressional mid-term elections on November 2. (source)
Is Big Bad Blue California Turning Red?
By Carole on Jul 13, 2010
If the midterm elections were held today, Republican Meg Whitman would be the next Governor of California and Republican Carly Fiorina would be the state's next senator. According to a new CBS poll, Ms. Fiorina leads incumbent Senator Barbara Boxer (D-California) by a slim but measurable two point margin and Ms. Whitman's lead over State Attorney General Jerry Brown (D) has grown to seven points with 46% of likely voters supporting her and only 39% supporting Mr. Brown. The Congressional All-Star Game Begins
By Carole on Jul 11, 2010
Major League Baseball's All Star break starts after today's games have been decided. For the next few days, those players voted in by the fans or chosen by the big bosses will put on a display of their skills in a relatively meaningless endeavor. Coincidentally this week also marks the beginning of the time Congress is in session between their July 4 recess and their extended August recess. Think of it as the All Star Game for our government.
