Legislative leaders in Massachusetts believe they have enough votes to give Governor Deval Patrick (D) the power to appoint an interim US senator to Ted Kennedy's vacant seat. Such an appointment would allow Democrats to regain the supermajority of 60 in the Senate allowing the Obama administration to ram through controversial legislation such as health care reform and cap & trade without Republican interference.

Top political analyst Charlie Cook recently wrote that "the situation this summer has slipped completely out of control for President Obama and congressional Democrats". (source) Anyone who has been paying attention has got to agree and those who pay close attention are expecting double-digit losses in the House come the 2010 mid-term elections.

He was up 11% in the polls just two months ago but now Senator Arlen Specter (D-Pennsylvania) is trailing Republican Pat Toomey 48-36%. Senator Specter is still fighting off a Democratic challenger for his party's nomination in the 2010 election but even if he lost that, Mr. Toomey is way ahead of that other Democratic nominee (Congressman Joe Sestak) 43-35% according to the same poll.
