Gingrich Moving From Candidate To Champion

In a new interview, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich says he expects to finish in third place in the GOP delegate count and that there's a chance someone other than the four declared candidates could emerge from the party's August convention as the nominee. Neither of those statements is really news; various pundits have been saying the same for weeks. But what is newsworthy is that Mr. Gingrich has said them.

A Brokered Convention Could Energize Independents

As the fight for the Republican presidential nomination chugs along, the party establishment continues to push former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney as the only contender who could win over independent voters in a general election. Just like in 2008, the message is that only a moderate Republican who fails to inspire the conservative base can defeat Barack Obama in November. It was the wrong message then and it is the wrong message now.

Way before the first caucus in Iowa, conservative have been concerned that the "Republican establishment" would propel the decidedly un-conservative Mitt Romney to the GOP nomination. The mainstream media has been happy to play along, practically writing the obituary of the tea party movement and discounting conservative contenders. The president's reelection campaign has focused almost exclusively on Mr. Romney as its de facto opponent. And yet somehow, despite all the collective firepower against them, those conservative voters are making their voices heard. They may not achieve an absolute victory for a conservative candidate via the primary process, but they are certainly raising the chances of a brokered convention in August.
Could A Brokered Convention Become A Tea Party?

Appearing on FNC's Happening Now this morning, former House Majority Leader and Chairman of FreedomWorks Dick Armey was asked to comment on reports that the Tea Party Movement has not been involved in the GOP primary process and may in fact be dead. As an influential voice in the movement, Mr. Armey explained that tea party activists have been working on reinforcing the conservative majority in the House and capturing a conservative majority in the Senate while the media has been focused only on presidential politics. But he also said the grassroots movement could have a very real role in choosing the eventual presidential nominee once the primary process is complete.
