If there was any doubt that the presidential campaign is starting fresh with today's announcement that Congressman Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin) will be presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney's running mate, one need only look at the results of a poll taken days ago. According to that CNN/ORC International survey, 27% of Americans have a favorable view of Mr. Ryan, 19% view him unfavorably and a whopping 54% say they don't know enough about Ryan to form an opinion.
Even among Republicans polled, 45% fall into that don't know enough to form an opinion category. These numbers say less about Congressman Ryan or Governor Romney's choosing skills than it does about the American electorate. Despite what those who eat, sleep and breathe politics think; the vast majority of voters have not been following the saga of our nation's debt crisis. They have not been paying close attention while, according to a Romney campaign statement, Congressman Ryan worked in Congress to "eliminate the federal deficit, reform the tax code and preserve entitlements for future generations."
They did not notice as the Republican-led House of Representatives passed the budget proposal which Congressman Ryan authored as Chairman of the House Budget Committee. Nor did they notice when that proposal died in the Democrat controlled Senate.
But they'll certainly learn more about it now that the GOP ticket is complete and the campaign begins in earnest.
In the coming weeks, as more Americans are introduced to Vice Presidential Candidate Ryan, they will understand exactly what he meant today when he said, "We can turn this thing around. Real solutions can be delivered. But, it will take leadership. And the courage to tell you the truth."
Of course the truth will not resonate with those already firm in their conviction to support the continued failures of President Barack Obama. They will somehow ignore the dismal results of four years of his stewardship and fall for another round of empty promises, lies and attempts to distract voters from his record by fanning the flames of class warfare.
Hopefully there are enough voters who can actually handle the truth and are ready to hear the Romney-Ryan message.
