Since Sunday's initial report of past sexual harassment allegations, GOP presidential contender Herman Cain's campaign has finally made a smart decision. Mrs. Gloria Cain, the candidate's wife of over 40 years, has cancelled a scheduled appearance on Friday night's edition of On the Record With Greta Van Susteren.

According to reports, Mrs. Cain left the door open to appearing on the Fox News Channel program in the future, but thankfully we won't be seeing another political wife under the heat of the national spotlight trying to defend her husband while the facts of a potential scandal are still murky.
And considering Team Cain's unsubstantiated attempts to blame their current mess on fellow candidate Rick Perry's campaign, the Republican party (and the country) could do without another political wife blaming some vast right wing conspiracy.
Hopefully Mrs. Cain's schedule change is the first sign of a new and improved overall approach. Any response to continuing reports of alleged inappropriate behavior, financial settlements, etc. should be made carefully and deliberately, not in sound bytes elicited by journalists eager for a scoop.
Newt Gingrich, another GOP contender who has waded through several scandals of his own, said this when asked about Mr. Cain's handling of his current situation, "My first advice is what he hasn't done, which is say nothing until you sit down with your lawyers and with the people who know the facts. You thoroughly and completely understand them and you go through a period where everybody asks you - in your team - every possible negative question so you thoroughly understand what will happen."
Looks like at least Mrs. Cain has taken that advice. As for the candidate and his campaign manager, stay tuned.
