NY-9 Offers Lessons For Republicans

It's doubtful that NY-9's message sent to President Barack Obama yesterday will get through. But the Republican victory in a district that has been held by Democrats since the roaring 20's sent some strong messages to the GOP as well and there are lessons to be learned by Republicans that will be running for office, supporting those who run and voting for those they support throughout the next 14 months.
Continued...
The fact that Republican Bob Turner won by a substantial 8 percent margin where Democrats out number Republicans 3-1 proves that even true-blue districts can be in play. Voters have personally felt the effects of President Obama's failed economic policies and, despite the administration's attempt to divert their blame to congressional Republicans, they understand who is bankrupting the nation and stifling job growth and who is standing up against more of the same failed ideas.
The results of yesterday's election also prove that no voting block can be taken for granted in 2012. The endorsement of Mr. Turner by former New York City Mayor Ed Koch (a Democrat and a Jew) encouraged voting for the Republican in order to send the Obama administration a message about its lax support of Israel. Apparently that message has been sent.
While no one expects Mr. Obama to change his economic policies or give more than lip service to strengthening his support for Israel as a result of this election, Republicans can and should learn from what happened in Brooklyn and Queens last night. In our current political climate; no district, no county and no state is safe enough to be taken for granted by its usual party or ignored by the one who had no chance before. The same is true for traditional voting blocks members of which who, as we saw in NY-9, can put reason over habit and common sense over blind party loyalty.
And finally, Mr. Turner's victory offers one more teachable moment for Republicans nationwide. They do not need to settle for any Republican-In-Name-Only out of fear that a true fiscal conservative doesn't have enough "electability". Mr. Turner won with a platform of smaller government, lower taxes and reasonable reform to save Social Security and Medicare. His positions on the issues read like a handbook for common sense conservatives and his message resounded with voters despite the constant accusations from his opponent that he was a "tea party extremist".
Conservatives should not be afraid to stick to their principles or to support Republican candidates who do the same.
