With just days to go before the special election to replace disgraced Congressman Anthony Weiner in the heavily Democratic ninth congressional district, Republican Bob Turner has surged to a 6 point lead over Democrat David Weprin in the latest independent poll. The new poll conducted by the Siena Research Institute shows retired businessman Turner with a 90-6 percent lead among Republicans and an astounding 65-27 percent lead among Independents. State Assemblyman David Weprin has managed only a 63-32 percent lead among his fellow Democrats.

And there's more bad news for Team Weprin: Business mogul Donald Trump has produced a robo-call endorsing Mr. Turner and framing the election as a clear referendum on the policies of the Obama administration. Not a bad strategy considering the president's approval rating in the district is just 36%.
"If you don’t like what’s going on in Washington, if you don’t like what’s happening with Israel, because Israel is being treated very badly and very unfairly by the Obama administration, vote for Bob Turner," says Mr. Trump in the recorded message. He goes on to tell residents of NY-9 that their votes will have a national impact. "Trust me, they’ll notice. Electing Bob Turner on Tuesday will be a shot heard ’round the country. Everybody is talking about this election, and everybody is looking to see what’s going to happen. President Obama and Congress will know that you had a lot to do with it."
In an odd piece of political theater, Mr. Weprin is planning a protest of Mr. Trump's endorsement of Turner in front of Trump Tower today. The protest announcement prompted this assessment from Team Turner, "The wheels have clearly come off the Weprin campaign."
Even the left leaning New York Times, has been forced to admit that "The Republican candidate is in a strong position heading into Tuesday's special election."
An amazing accomplishment already considering Democrats outnumber Republicans in the district by a 3-1 margin and Democrats have held this seat for almost 90 years. But there are still several days of campaigning to go and the desperate Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is trying to funnel more outside cash into NY-9. Stay tuned.
