Granted, polls show Mr. Romney still leading the current field of GOP candidates - the most recent from Gallup gives him a 9 point lead over his closest competitor. But it's very early in the process and it's likely that all the candidates have not even officially entered the race. In fact that same poll shows that if Texas Governor Rick Perry (already popular with many conservatives) makes the expected decision to run, he would be in an instant tie with Governor Romney.
So while it's understandable why the current frontrunner would try to improve his primary chances by attaching three strong conservative names to his candidacy, it’s uncertain whether any of them would even be interested in joining a Romney ticket. Also unknown is if the voters will be put off by a contender who is already acting as if he has the nomination.
