It Is Possible To Lose Your Country

Dueling rallies in Washington DC may be more exciting than another speech from a politician. The heated debate over building an Islamic Center near Ground Zero may be more inspiring than economic policies. But this week's GOP radio address delivered by Florida's Republican candidate for US Senate Marco Rubio is definitely worth our attention.
Continued...
Early in a speech that not surprisingly calls for more fiscal responsibility from the federal government, Mr. Rubio offers a glimpse of what most Americans could not imagine just a few years ago:
"Today the American Dream is threatened by out of control politicians in Washington, who think that more government deficit spending is what it takes to grow our economy. That has never worked anywhere it’s been tried and it won’t work now. Now for some it may be hard to imagine that the American Dream could actually be at risk, but as the son of exiles I know firsthand that it is possible to lose your country because my parents lost theirs." It is possible to lose your country. As Americans we have often witnessed while others suffered such loss. In many cases our country has been the refuge for so many who fled the type of poverty and oppression inflicted on people like Mr. Rubio's parents by governments like that of Castro's Cuba. But we never thought of ourselves as potential refugees; as people who may have to decide between lives with no opportunities and starting over somewhere else with virtually nothing in the hope that such a risk will provide opportunities for our children if not for ourselves.
And if that scenario plays out; if the American Dream dies, where could millions of impoverished and oppressed Americans go to take that risk?
In his address Mr. Rubio offers the common sense approach to preventing that worst case scenario and preserving the American Dream for future generations. He calls on Washington to "realize that politicians don’t create jobs" and that "the job of government is to create an economic climate that encourages the job creators."
Toward that end, he speaks against the massive tax hikes set to take effect at the end of the year. He endorses the abandonment of ideas like Cap & Trade and Card Check. He supports ending the failed stimulus and using the leftover funds to pay down the debt. And he favors the repeal of Obamacare and replacing it with real reform that will "lower health insurance costs for Americans without bankrupting the nation."
While we (and the media) get caught up in the more sensational issues, it's important not to lose sight of the battle for that American Dream.
