Even Crist Doesn't Know Where Crist Stands

Florida Governor and US Senate candidate Charlie Crist is finding it more and more difficult to keep his fluctuating positions on the issues straight. While still a Republican he strongly supported the disastrous Obama Stimulus. Once he was assured a loss in the GOP primary he decided to abandon his party but kept its donors' cash. And now amid falling poll numbers, his go-along-to-get-along positions are starting to confuse even him.
Continued...
The latest shift in Mr. Crist's belief system involves the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare). Previously on the record saying he would have voted against the legislation, the governor appeared on an Orlando TV station on Monday and was asked: "Health care bill, how would you have voted on that?" Mr. Crist responded, "I would have voted for it but I think it can be done better. I really do." (source)
This about-face on one of the central issues in the upcoming election was immediately noticed by both of his opponents. Republican Marco Rubio's campaign called it the governor's "fifth position on Obamacare" and Democrat Kendrick Meek's campaign sent reporters Mr. Crist's statement from the day the health care bill passed in which the governor called Obamacare "a direct affront to the American people."
Mr. Crist issued a statement acknowledging that "There may be some confusion regarding my position on health care" and that "if I misspoke, I want to be abundantly clear: the health care bill was too big, too expensive, and expanded the role of government far too much. Had I been in the United States Senate at the time, I would have voted against the bill because of unacceptable provisions like the cuts to the Medicare Advantage program."
So "I would have voted for it" might have been an example of misspeaking and the governor was against Obamacare before he was for it but now is against it again. Not a surprising ever-changing position from a man who was a Republican before he was an Independent who if elected will caucus with the Democrats unless that will cost him too many Republican votes.
Expect more desperate and nonsensical scrambling from Mr. Crist now that his opponents have won their respective primaries and Florida voters can make a clear choice. As the first post-primary poll of likely voters shows, Mr. Rubio now has a double digit lead over Mr. Crist (40% - 30%) with even Mr. Meek gaining on the flip-flopping governor with 21%. (source)
