Let Us Bake Cake

Marie Antoinette may not be the best historical reference for the current Obama Family vs. the American people disconnect. First, there's no proof that the 18th century French queen ever actually uttered the phrase "Let them eat cake" when told the peasants had no bread. And second, the majority of the American people are not demanding that the Obama government give them bread or cake or anything else except the freedom to do our own baking.

As the current administration and their Congressional accomplices keep marching ever leftward, many of their ideological opponents are getting caught up in comparisons to the way long-dead royalty treated their subjects. While there may be some personal similarities between detached queens, self-indulgent emperors and the Obamas, surrendering to those sensational and dramatic analogies can serve to blind us to the reality in which we live.
Barack Obama is not an emperor. Unlike Nero, who legend claims fiddled while Rome burned, Mr. Obama did not come to power by birthright nor has he been imbued with divine qualities worthy of worship. He is a man; a public servant elected for a four-year term to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.
Similarly Michelle Obama is not a queen. Other than the honorific title of First Lady, she has no official place in our government other than to benefit from the perks of her husband's office and the publicity generated by her relationship to him. This makes Democratic Party Chairman Tim Kaine's comments on this morning's Today show that much more disturbing. In defending Mrs. Obama's recent trip to Spain which cost US taxpayers $75,000 per day for transportation and security, Chairman Kaine said he thinks "it's wrong" to talk critically about her trips. (source) Exactly when did it become wrong for Americans to criticize how their taxdollars are being spent?
In the days of emperors and queens it was wrong to crticize the public policies and personal extravagances of monarchs and their family members. It didn't matter how wasteful and unfair their lifestyles became while the people they ruled suffered and struggled. Those born to power decided when, where and how much the common people could have be it jobs, housing, education, even the very food on their tables.
Thankfully we do not live in such times. We need to remember that neither President nor Mrs. Obama are supreme rulers and that the American people have not been reduced to begging them for sustenance. We are not standing at their metaphorical iron gate demanding bread We are asserting our freedom to do our own baking.
