Alvin Greene, the 32-year-old unemployed Army veteran currently living in his parents' basement and facing a felony obscenity charge will represent the Democratic party in South Carolina's senatorial election against incumbent Senator Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina). There was some doubt after the political unknown won his party's primary last week but a committee of state Democrats rejected a protest by primary loser, former state legislator and judge Vic Rawl clearing the way for Mr. Greene to move forward with his campaign.

Mr. Rawl claimed his loss was due to unreliable electronic voting machines that witnesses say malfunctioned. But those witnesses (including Mr. Rawl's campaign manager) could not convince the committee who voted 33-7 to uphold the election results. Mr. Greene was not present at the meeting and has publicly said he will not cede the nomination despite being asked to do so by State Democratic Party Chairwoman Carol Fowler. (source)
While his candidacy was making news at that meeting, the candidate made some himself with his words to a reporter from TIME magazine, "I am the best candidate for the United States Senate in South Carolina," Mr. Greene said in the article published on Tuesday "And I am also the best person to be TIME magazine's Man of the Year." Man of the Year or not, Mr. Greene will certainly be a man to watch during this campaign season. The senate race in South Carolina was forecasted to be a slam dunk for Senator DeMint before Mr. Greene's nomination and nothing seems to have changed (Mr. DeMint leads 58% to 21% in the latest poll). But that doesn't mean it can't be entertaining. In another recent interview Mr. Greene claimed his campaign was and remains "self-managed" and that he will challenge Senator DeMint to a debate in September. "It will be one hour. Live. On a major network,” he proposed. (source)
Now that sounds like must-see-TV.
