Same Spin, Different Delivery Method For Blumenthal

Yesterday Connecticut Attorney General and Democratic Senate Candidate Richard Blumenthal's e-mailed claim that he had not been "clear or precise" about his military service, that he had made mistakes and was sorry did not ring true. But rather than finally admit he lied and was sorry for his lie, Mr. Blumenthal decided it was the method with which he delivered his spin that was the problem.

In a frustrating-to-watch impromptu interview with reporters after a scheduled event at a new shelter for homeless war veterans, Mr. Blumenthal did nothing more than repeat (multiple times) the ridiculous phrases from his e-mailed statement:
"I want to say I made mistakes"
"I'm sorry to anyone who may have been offended."
"I expressed regret and took full responsibility for words that should have been more precise."
Again and again, he was mistaken and imprecise never deliberate and deceitful.
What Candidate Blumenthal did change was some of the phrasing in his pro-veteran stump speech. During his formal remarks at the shelter opening, he did not mention having served in the military at all (even though he did, just not in Vietnam). This time he described himself not as a fellow soldier, but as a fighter for veterans. (source) Is he being overly cautious now or, on some deep personal level, does he realize what a shameful thing he's done?
Regardless of why he's changing his rhetoric from this point forward, it is unlikely Mr. Blumenthal will ever admit he lied about his military service in the past or that he is sorry he lied about his military service in the past. Instead, he will continue via various methods of communication, to blather about mistakes, misstatements and misplaced words. The only thing he seems to honestly regret is that he got caught.
