It's Not A Good Time To Be A Reid

The political future for those named Reid and running for office in Nevada looks very bleak indeed. In the latest Mason-Dixon poll, Senator Harry Reid (D-Nevada) is trailing his most likely general election opponent, former chairman of the Nevada Republican Party Sue Lowden, by a 46% to 38% margin. (source) The senator's son, gubernatorial candidate Rory Reid (D), is far behind his likely Republican opponent, former federal judge Brian Sandoval, by 15 points (50% to 35%). (source)

Primary Day in the Silver State will is June 8, after which Candidates Lowden and Sandoval should be able to concentrate full time on making political life for the Reid boys even more miserable than current numbers indicate.
Meanwhile on the Reid campaign trail last week, Senator Reid uttered another "Reidism". In an interview about his chances for reelection he firmly stated, "If the election were held today, I’d win." (source) Makes on wonder if he is whistling in the graveyard, in psychotic denial or just really bad at math?
Reid the Younger has more than his surname working against him. He's a former state Democratic Party chairman in an election cycle that is predicted to favor Republicans and he has, in traditional Democratic fashion, refused to say how he would have handled an $805 million shortfall in the $6.8 billion state budget. Likely opponent Sandoval said he would cut state employee salaries, reduce state health premium subsidies and eliminate subsidies for retirees. He also proposed privatizing some state services. The one positive that may work in Rory's Reid's favor: in 2008 he signed on early to chair Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign in Nevada while his father declined to make an immediate endorsement and eventually settled on following Barack Obama to the edge of a political cliff.
