The Obamacare Effect

What happens when you're the Democrat who cast the deciding 60th vote to push Obamacare through the Senate on Christmas Eve? Not surprisingly, only 36% of voters support you while any potential Republican challenger wins the support of over 50%. That's what's happening to Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-Arkansas) according to the latest poll. (source)

Despite the fact that 60% of Arkansas voters believe the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare) is bad for the country (only 28% think it's a good idea), Senator Lincoln jumped on the Obama Express and is not only in trouble against Republicans, she's facing a challenge for her own party's nomination.
Lieutenant Governor Bill Halter (D) jumped into the primary race after Ms. Lincoln angered fellow Democrats by waffling on the health care issue. While she cast that deciding vote for the legislation in December, she voted against the recently passed reconciliation bill saying, "I didn't feel like it had the transparency that the other process did." (source) Transparency of process aside, she seems to be trying to please everyone while pleasing no one. Her both-sides-of-the-fence approach has not only helped her in the polls, it's not helping the Arkansas Democrats' brand. Mr. Halter (who strongly supports the PPAC Act) also trails all Republican challengers by wide margins.
Both parties will choose their Senate nominees in a May 18 primary. But no matter which Democrat gets the nod, they will have to contend with a state electorate that is not buying what they're trying to sell.
