Obama's Bounce Goes Bust

President Barack Obama's anticipated approval rating bounce after passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare) has gone bust. Already disappointing for the Obama machine was the smaller than expected size of the bounce, but even that has been washed away during the days since the bill was signed.

According to Gallup's daily tracking poll, 51% approved of the president's overall job performance two days after the signing ceremony. That was only slightly better than his ratings for most of this month which averaged in the high 40's. Today that number is back down to 48% with 45% disapproving of the job Mr. Obama is doing. Over at Rasmussen's daily tracking poll, only 47% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the president's performance while 53% disapprove. The modest bounce that poll showed immediately after the passage of Obamacare last week has disappeared as well. (source)
Of course signing the PPAC Act wasn't the only item on last week's presidential agenda for which Mr. Obama's performance is being judged. He also reached a virtually meaningless nuclear arms agreement with Russia and took time out of his busy schedule to snub Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The start of this new week brings news that President Obama made a surprise visit to Afghanistan for a few hours to meet with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and his Cabinet at the presidential palace, top US military commander General Stanley McChrystal and US Ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry. He also was to speak with American troops. (source)
Will the inevitable photo op of the Commander-in-Chief in a war zone get him another bounce in the polls? Probably. But like last week's it will most likely be small, insignificant and short-lived.
