An Unpleasant Recess Ahead For Democrats

Congress may be taking the next two weeks off for their Easter recess, but most who supported the hugely unpopular and obscenely expensive new law known as Obamacare will have plenty to do during their time off. Instead of the usual fundraising and campaign organizing, they will be trying to justify how they ignored their own constituents and helped the Obama machine enact a government takeover of health care.

During the Congress's summer recess last year, ordinary Americans showed up at Town Hall meetings across the country and voiced their disapproval of the then-pending health care reform legislation. We all remember the videos (many made by regular citizens since the main stream media preferred to ignore the events) which showed elected representatives unable to explain why they supported the bill in the face of the reasonable questions and common sense objections of those present.
Those uncomfortable and embarrassing moments for Democratic Representatives and Senators were a primary reason why House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) and her henchmen held lawmakers hostage at the Capitol for days. She was understandably desperate to push through both the bill and its reconciliation sidecar before members went home to face those they are sworn to serve.
But what the speaker and the president and virtually every other cog in the Obama machine has failed to realize is that, unlike most of their far-left base, the hardworking, freedom-loving and currently very angry people who oppose their socialist policies have a collective attention span longer than the latest fashion trend.
Instead of sitting back and waiting for handouts from the government, they will stand up and demand that their elected representatives behave like elected representatives and not sycophants to a president whose agenda is at best naive and at worst intentionally catastrophic.
Proving that those Town Hall meetings last summer were minor inconveniences compared to what will happen during the current Congressional recess; thousands of people are streaming into Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's hometown of Searchlight, Nevada today for a rally that will feature a speech by former Governor of Alaska and Tea Party star Sarah Palin. The gathering crowd, predicted to swell to 10,000 people, carried American flags, "Don't Tread on Me" signs and plenty of anger toward President Barack Obama and his health care overhaul. (source)
Certainly Senator Reid won't be the only lawmaker facing a strong, large and loud negative response to their recent legislative choices. At least one has already taken what seems like a step back from his full-on support of Obamacare. Representative Henry Waxman (D-California) who chairs the Committee on Energy and Commerce said he would hold a hearing next month to investigate the effects of the law on big companies. He has asked the chief executives of Caterpillar, Deere & Company and Verizon for financial data to document the projected impact of the law on their companies and he has asked them to explain their accounting methods. "The new law is designed to expand coverage and bring down costs," Mr. Waxman said, adding that he would be concerned if it drove up costs. (source)
You can expect plenty of questions and investigations as lawmakers face the reaction to and the results of the new law. You can expect the opposition to keep pressing for accountability from those who rammed the new law through. And you can expect Congressional Democrats to have a very unpleasant Easter recess.
