The Unspoken Promise Obama Has Kept

If abracadabra didn't work, try shazam. President Obama keeps talking and talking in favor of his version of health care reform seeming to believe that if he just stumbles onto the right word or gesture he will magically convince the American people (and enough Democrats in Congress) that the legislation they have opposed for a year is suddenly a good thing.

It's understandable why Mr. Obama believes that victory comes from spouting lots of empty words and looking like you know what you're doing. After all that's what got him elected. But actual governing is obviously a skill beyond his abilities. Pitching yet again for Obamacare on Monday, the president complained about his current work environment by saying, "When you're in Washington, folks respond to every issue, every decision, every debate, no matter how important it is, with the same question: What does this mean for the next election? What does it mean for your poll numbers? Is this good for the Democrats or good for the Republicans?" (source)
What Mr. Obama still fails to comprehend is that he serves the American people and it is their opinions that are reflected in those polls and their determination of whether the Democrats or the Republicans are doing the right thing that matters. His arrogant "I won" attitude may have been forgivable in the weeks, even months after his election but it has now been 16 months since he won anything and since that time he has done precious little that the American people would classify as the right thing.
For a man who claims he's above those who care about polls and elections, he certainly is doing a lot of campaigning. At yesterday's Pennsylvania rally Mr. Obama took off his jacket, rolled up his sleeves and shouted out to supporters, "I want you to stand with me and fight with me!" (source) And chances are he'll put on the same show on Wednesday when he makes yet another speech on Obamacare to yet another friendly crowd, this time in St. Louis.
As the perpetual candidate continues the campaign for his unpopular far-left agenda, he needs to be reminded that there is a difference between thinking beyond partisan politics and ignoring the will of the electorate. The first was one of Candidate Obama's many broken promises. The second is the unspoken promise President Obama has kept.
