Worshipping At The Altar Of Obama

Since resigning from controversial Pastor Jeremiah Wright's Trinity United Church during the 2008 campaign, the Obama family has chosen not to attend regular religious services. In fact the first family has attended Sunday services only three times in Washington since the president's inauguration and while they initially said they would find a local church to attend they have cited concerns about crowds and displacing regular worshippers as the reason they have not done so. (source) But on this particular Sunday, President Obama found a worthwhile reason to go to church: he got to make it all about him.

The president stood in the pulpit of Washington's Vermont Avenue Baptist Church this morning supposedly to commemorate civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. But he couldn't resist inserting a not-so-subtle commercial for his failing politics by saying that those pushing for change must take heart and recognize progress when it comes. (source)
After his time "on stage", Mr. Obama was off to Massachusetts in a desperate, last ditch attempt to save fellow Democrat Martha Coakley's Senate campaign with yet another speech most likely about himself.
Meanwhile, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino (D) was also taking advantage of a Sunday church service to make a speech about (you guessed it) President Obama. Under the guise of supporting Candidate Coakley at a morning prayer service that was supposed to be for victims of the Haiti earthquake, Mr. Menino told the congregation, "A lot of people don't want Barack Obama to succeed, and that's who we're fighting against. They don't want him to be a president that leads this country. They want him to be a president who fails." (source)
Actually what most people want is for his proposed policies to fail to become law, Mr. Mayor. You shouldn't lie like that, especially in church. But I can understand how tough it must be to remember you're in a church when it becomes a place to sing the praises of Barack Obama and his political machine instead of a place to praise God.
