Corzine to Deeds to Coakley. No they aren't the newest double play combination in the majors. They are three Democrats who desperately hoped President Barack Obama could save their failing campaigns by making a last minute joint appearance with them. Corzine and Deeds found out in November that Mr. Obama's political capital is non-transferable. Coakley is about to learn the same thing when the president travels to Massachusetts on Sunday.

The president's approval rating is even lower now than it was when he "helped" losing gubernatorial candidates Jon Corzine and Creigh Deeds in New Jersey and Virginia respectively and Candidate Martha Coakley's campaign to win the late Ted Kennedy's seat in the US Senate already got a presidential visit. Former President Bill Clinton, the Democrat who is still popular, appeared at a Coakley rally on Friday and gave a speech that was not pro Coakley or even anti her opponent, Republican Scott Brown. Instead he railed against the Tea Party movement; the private American citizens who have dared to speak out against big government bailouts, takeovers and entitlements. (source)
That type of negative campaigning has Ms. Coakley now trailing Mr. Brown by 4 points in the latest independent poll (source) and by 3 points in her campaign's own internal poll. (source)
Meanwhile back at issues that actually matter to the voters of Massachusetts, Candidate Brown is criticizing President Obama's plan to tax banks that received federal bailout money informing voters that the tax would be passed on to ordinary consumers through higher service and ATM fees. (source) Candidate Coakley supports the bank tax just as she supports all of the Obama administration's plans and policies.
She should ask Mr. Corzine and Mr. Deeds how that worked out for them.
