Political Theater Of The Absurdly Obvious

The latest attempt by the Obama administration to hide their incompetence and deny their failed policies is to state the obvious as if it were new information. In his weekly radio address Saturday, President Obama said of the Flight 253 bomber, "We know that he traveled to Yemen, a country grappling with crushing poverty and deadly insurgencies. It appears that he joined an affiliate of al-Qaida, and that this group - al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula - trained him, equipped him with those explosives and directed him to attack that plane headed for America." Great detective work, Mr. President. The New York Times and hundreds of other media outlets published that information a week ago citing your government sources. (source)

Of course those news reports didn't mention that Yemen is grappling with crushing poverty. Perhaps because Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the 23 year old Nigerian who boarded Flight 253 with explosives in his shorts, was the son of a wealthy Nigerian banker, educated at top schools in Africa and the UK and lived in million dollar homes. But the important thing to stress here, according to our president, is that there is both poverty and terrorism in the world and we must imply at every opportunity that the two are somehow connected even when they aren't.
The next piece of "breaking news" out of the administration this weekend came from National Counterterrorism Center Director Michael Leiter who said in a statement that officials "know with absolute certainty" that al-Qaida and others are trying to refine their methods. (source) Really Mr. Leiter? Islamic terrorists are trying to find a way to kill as many Americans as possible? If only the previous administration had told us that. Oh wait, they did and were subsequently accused of fear mongering by your current boss, his congressional cronies and his accomplices in the liberal media. Now suddenly it's big news that the War on Terror is still being waged by our enemies.
