Obama's Iranian Engagement Fails

It was revealed in late September that Iran has a heavily guarded, underground uranium enrichment facility near the city of Qom Speaking at the United Nations on this revelation, President Barack Obama said "We have offered Iran a clear path toward greater international integration if it lives up to its obligations, and that offer stands. But the Iranian government must now demonstrate through deeds its peaceful intentions or be held accountable to international standards and international law." Not surprisingly those words did not have a chilling effect on Iran's nuclear ambitions and today the Iranian government approved a plan to build 10 new uranium enrichment facilities in defiance of UN demands it halt the program. Recently the UN censured Iran, demanding it immediately stop building the enrichment facility near Qom and freeze all uranium enrichment activities. But no one expects UN censures to have any real effect on rogue nations like Iran. What the world and the American people do expect is that Western leaders will let these nations know that there will be serious economic and/or military consequences if they continue down their current path. Every US president since Jimmy Carter has taken a strong stance against the militant Islamic Iranian government which came to power during the Carter administration. Until now. President Obama continues to offer "a clear path toward greater international integration" and plays along with the farcical idea that Iran has "peaceful intentions" for the approximately 3,300 pounds of low-enriched uranium it currently possesses (considerably more than the amount needed to produce weapons-grade material). Shortly after he took office, Mr. Obama spoke of the new approach he was going to take with Iran saying, "My belief is that engagement is the place to start." and that he wanted to adopt "a new emphasis on respect and a new willingness on being willing to talk" to the Iranians, while making it clear "that we also have certain expectations." (source) Well he has engaged and respected and talked and expected. He even tried appeasement by refusing to even speak out against the violent oppression of the Iranian people by their government when they tried to peacefully protest election results they believed to be fraudulent. So how does that Iranian government react to Mr. Obama's tactics of engagement? It metaphorically spits in his face at every opportunity; it takes the open hand he extends, uses it to turn him around, twist his arm behind his back and kick him in his presidential hindquarters. Then it makes plans to build 10 new uranium enrichment facilities
Just like every other foreign and domestic policy this administration has come up with, it's failing miserably. And on this one, the consequences of continued failure would be devastating.
