Afghanistan Needs More Than A Surge Of Words

No matter what President Obama's much anticipated new strategy for the war in Afghanistan is, it won't live up to the hype caused by months of indecisiveness. "No Drama Obama", as he was called during the presidential campaign, has turned the most important part of his job, keeping America safe, into political theater of the absurd. And it's not just his political opponents and the American people who realize it.

Yesterday British Defense Secretary Bob Ainsworth took the unprecedented step of publicly criticizing the US President and his delays in sending more troops to bolster the mission against the Taliban. A "period of hiatus" in Washington - and a lack of clear direction - had made it harder for ministers to persuade the British public to go on backing the Afghan mission in the face of a rising death toll, he said. What did Mr. Obama do yesterday? He announced that he would announce something soon then hosted his first State dinner with a guest list full of Hollywood moguls, entertainers and donors. Before dashing off to his party, the president said he felt "very confident that when the American people hear a clear rationale for what we're doing [in Afghanistan] and how we intend to achieve our goals, that they will be supportive." After all the presidential delays, distractions and dithering; that better be one very clear rationale that fully supports our military in their mission. They've waited more than long enough for their Commander-in-Chief to start doing his job.
