This was widely predicted by those who opposed the Obama administration's decision to try these terrorists in a civilian court. Comments made by Attorney General Eric Holder when he announced the decision now seem even more naive and foolish in light of this defense strategy. In his press conference Mr. Holder stated "I am confident in the ability of our courts to provide these defendants a fair trial, just as they have for over 200 years." (source) Obviously a fair trial is not what these "defendants" seek.
Mr. Holder also declared that the many Americans who lost friends and relatives in the attacks "deserve the opportunity to see the alleged plotters of those attacks held accountable in court." (source) Do they deserve to have to listen to these admitted killers' politics? Do they need to watch as those who murdered their loved ones try to justify their acts with their warped view of religion? And should they be forced to sit quietly while our own judicial system allows these killers to claim that the victims deserved their fate?
We are playing right into the hands of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and his accomplices - giving them the public forum, the international media coverage and the legal protection to spread their murderous message. And this time it will not be just the terrorists who should be blamed. It will be the Obama administration for choosing to empower them.
