If It Kills Like A Terrorist...

Have we really gone so far down the rabbit hole that we don't recognize Islamic terrorism when it literally shoots us in the face? In the aftermath of the Fort Hood attack, many seem perplexed over whether Major Nidal Malik Hasan, who witnesses say shouted "Allahu Akbar” before he opened fire on a room full of unarmed soldiers, was committing a terrorist act. Seriously?

Here's what we know so far:
- Major Hasan's classmates in a 2007-2008 military college master's program complained repeatedly to superiors about what they considered Hasan's anti-American views. (source)
- Fellow Army doctor Dr. Val Finnell said Major Hasan gave a presentation at the Uniformed Services University that justified suicide bombing and told classmates that Islamic law trumped the U.S. Constitution. (source)
- Major Hasan had attempted to connect with Anwar al Awlaki, a radical mosque leader who runs an English language anti-American web site that promotes jihad. (source)
- Oh, and Major Hasan killed 13 people and wounded 29 after shouting "Allahu Akbar". (source)
There has been much discussion over the last few days about whether Major Hasan is an Islamic terrorist or suffers from mental illness. Those two things are not mutually exclusive. Most mass murderers suffer from some sort of mental illness. But many more people who suffer from those illnesses do not go out and shoot 42 innocent people. Major Hasan's issues may provide some insight into why he became an Islamic terrorist but they certainly do not preclude him from being one.
According to the latest news this morning, Major Hasan is now out of his coma and speaking to doctors. That should mean that soon enough he'll be able to tell us himself whether or not he is an Islamic terrorist. That is of course if the ACLU doesn't get to him first.
