The Buck Stops Anywhere But The White House

President Obama continues to do anything he can to avoid making a decision. Proving yet again that he's no leader, he sent his chief of staff Rahm Emanuel into the Sunday morning talk show arena to proclaim that the president will not commit more US troops to Afghanistan until he is convinced there's an Afghan partner. (source) Despite General Stanley McChrystal's recommendation that thousands more troops are needed in the 8 year old conflict, the president continues to ignore the opinion of his hand-picked commander in Afghanistan in favor of his usual strategy - discuss, delay and ultimately "vote present".

True, there are questions about fraud in the recent re-election of Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai and a runoff election between Mr. Karzai and his top challenger, former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah may be necessary to resolve the issue. But the United States and its allies are not in Afghanistan to meddle in their internal politics. They are there to prevent the Taliban from recreating the safe haven for terrorists that existed in the country before the September 11 attacks. That job still needs to be done and General McChrystal has been quite clear about what he needs to get it done.
The administration's latest excuse could buy them months of indecisiveness since the brutal winter weather in Afghanistan is just weeks away and could affect when a new election would take place. During his Sunday morning interviews, Mr. Emanuel was asked but wouldn't directly answer whether the president would wait for a final election outcome before deciding US troop levels in Afghanistan. That refusal to answer speaks volumes.
As American military personnel remain in harm's way and terrorists gain momentum, President Obama refuses to make a decision. Instead he sends out his accomplices to make excuses for his indecisiveness. President Harry Truman had a famous sign on his desk that read "The Buck Stops Here". President Obama should have one that reads "Buck-Passer-In-Chief".
