Once Again The UN Proves Its Irrelevance

Yesterday the United Nations presented a parade of buffoons that, were international tensions not so high, would have been comical. Perhaps when the institution was founded in 1945 if might have served a purpose. There definitely was reason to hope back then that it might. But it has failed, miserably and repeatedly, to live up to its charter "to maintain international peace and promote cooperation in solving international economic, social and humanitarian problems."
Continued...
We have seen how useless the so-called Security Council is with back room (and some times front room) deals preventing any real strength behind their resolutions. And we have seen how nations with atrocious human rights abuse records can serve on their now defunct Human Rights Council. Yet we continue to fund this useless organization - the United States supplies 22% of their $4.19 billion budget - and offer its stage and microphone to politicians from all lands who can lie, attack, threaten and inflame with absolute impunity.
Cases in point from yesterday's speeches before the United Nations
"No world order that elevates one nation or group of people over another will succeed." - President Barack Obama
We have occasionally gotten a glimpse of Mr. Obama's ignorance of history (things like claiming his uncle was among the first American troops to liberate Auschwitz when it was the Soviet army who did so, claiming the civil rights march in Selma inspired his parents to marry and conceive him when the march was in 1965 and he was conceived in 1960). But this one yesterday tops them all! Every "world order" that has ever succeeded was lead by one nation or group that was over all others in the order. The big difference is whether that one nation is a malevolent super power (i.e. Soviet Russia) or a benevolent one (i.e. The United States from the end of World War II until, well, the Obama administration).
"We must verify the General Assembly in the genocide of the major invasion of Iraq, and in the execution of prisoners of war in Iraq during the invasion, and in the crimes of Abu Ghraib, a shameful affront to humanity." - Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi
After being introduced (with a straight face even) as "Leader of the revolution, President of the African Union and King of Kings of Africa," Mr. Gaddafi rambled on for over 90 minutes calling for UN investigations into every conspiracy theory since the Kennedy assassination.
Iran is prepared to "warmly shake all those hands which are honestly extended to us." - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
The only worthwhile and important statement made at the UN yesterday was when some Western delegations (lead by Canada) walked out as Ahmadinejad began speaking to protest his denials of the Holocaust and what many see as his fraudulent re-election.
And so, after that ridiculous day of useless speeches to an impotent body, I suggest we turn at least some of that lovely real estate along the East River into a museum dedicated to the memory of how great America once was and hopefully how great it will be again one strength, competence and common sense return.
