Gadhafi had planned to pitch a ceremonial Bedouin-style tent on the property which the Libyan government purchased in 1982 and has been renovating extensively in anticipation of Gadhafi's first visit to the United States. But state and local officials have protested, most notably Englewood Mayor Michael Wildes who said, "If the US State Department won't shut this down, we will." (source)
The strong rhetoric and threats of injunctions seem to have worked. Congressman Steve Rothman (D-New Jersey) announced late Friday afternoon that he's been assured by Libyan officials that Gadhafi won't stay in Englewood. Kudos to the people of Englewood and the surrounding area for preventing another public desecration of the victims of Flight 103 so soon after the hero's welcome for Abdel Baset al-Megrahi.
