In a USA Today op-ed piece this morning Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-California) and Representative Steny Hoyer (D-Maryland) claim that Americans are speaking against Obamacare at town hall meetings because they are afraid "not just of differing views - but of the facts themselves." And then they dropped the U-Bomb claiming that "Drowning out opposing views is simply un-American." (source)

It's impossible to be afraid of "the facts" when we aren't allowed to know "the facts". The rest of the relatively short article repeats the same promises and platitudes President Obama has been spouting since the campaign, "[R]eform will mean more patient choice. It will allow every American who likes his or her current plan to keep it. And it will free doctors and patients to make the health decisions that make the most sense, not the most profits for insurance companies." (source) But as always there are no details about how it will work and how it will be paid for; no guarantees that care will not be rationed or that beureaucrats will determine what care will be available to whom.
What Mrs. Pelosi refuses to acknowledge is that without specifics the American people will not quietly accept this type of government intervention in our lives. When we ask for specifics via e-mail and letters we get form letters filled with the same empty promises and platitudes. Through the media we are told that our anger has been manufactured. We are dismissed, ridiculed and otherwise ignored by the very people sworn to protect our interests. Is it any wonder that when we attend town hall meetings and the same empty words are repeated over and over each time we ask for real answers that protests result? It is not un-American to demand that our elected representatives listen to their constituents. It is not un-American to cut off the talking points and platitudes by demanding that those representatives who claim to be in favor of a bill actually read the bill, answer our questions and address our concerns.
What is un-American is government officials attempting to silence the American people via insults and intimidation.
