Another Blue State Senator Is Losing His Grip On Power

Senator Chris Dodd (D-Connecticut) is another Democrat working hard to turn his blue state red in 2010. Despite repeated denials that he knew he was getting a sweetheart deal from mortgage giant Countrywide (who went on to lose billions on home loans to credit-strapped borrowers), the official who handled his loans told Congress that Dodd got VIP discounts from the lender. (source) Ironically, Dodd's position as head of the Banking Committee gave him the job of solving the housing foreclosure and financial crises and the irony hasn't been lost on voters in his home state where the five-term senator is trailing Republican Rob Simmons 48-39 percent in the latest poll. The same poll finds that the majority of Connecticut voters do not believe Senator Dodd is honest or trustworthy, something former Congressman Simmons is taking advantage of with his latest fundraising gimmick. The Simmons campaign launched "Pocket Dodd" this week, tweeting that "now you too can have Connecticut's senior senator in your back pocket." Mr. Simmons' website proclaims "If you're a wealthy special interest donor - like Angelo Mozilo of Countrywide Mortgage, or the guys at AIG, or even a pawn shop owner -- you can rest easy knowing that you have a powerful Senator like Chris Dodd in your back pocket" and offers a cardboard cutout of Senator Dodd for a donation of just $5.00 or more. When asked about the last poll numbers, Dodd campaign manager Jay Howser said his candidate is "determined right now to reform health care. Politics can wait for another day."
As he keeps on supporting the unpopular policies of Barack Obama and more information about his shady mortgage deals come to light, Senator Dodd may not have any political days to spare.
