Another Very Blue State Is Looking A Little Purple

Incumbent New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine is battling calls for change in his economically devastated and scandal riddled state. And Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter is in a virtual dead heat with the Republican challenger he switched parties to avoid facing in the state's primary. Now it's Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer from the very blue state of California who is feeling the heat. She still leads Republican and former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina 45-41 percent but just four months ago Senator Boxer was leading 47-38 percent. (source) Oh, and Carly Fiorina hasn't even decided yet if she's going to run for the seat in 2010.

So why are Senator Boxer's poll numbers slipping almost as fast as the president she strongly supports? Did just I answer my own question there? Maybe, but Ms. Boxer will have plenty of her own actions to blame as well if she ends up losing the seat she's held since 1993. Recently:
Harry C. Alford, president of the National Black Chamber of Commerce, testified at an Environment and Public Works Committee hearing opposing a climate change bill. Mr.Alford took offense to Boxer quoting supporting statements from the NAACP and 100 Black Men group, "I'm the National Black Chamber of Commerce and you're trying to put up some other black group to pit against me," he angrily told Boxer. "As an African-American and a veteran of this country, I take offense to that." (source)
And in June, Senator Boxer rebuked an Army Brigadier general for calling her "ma'am" telling the general, "Could you say senator instead of ma'am? It's just a thing, I worked so hard to get that title, so I'd appreciate it." The senator defied calls to apologize publicly. (source)
Then of course there's the financial crisis in her home state that, while she may not be directly responsible for, will certainly be connected with her thanks to her party affiliation and leftist ideology. No one could blame Californians for wanting some real hope and change this time around.
