The battle of truths between Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and CIA Director Leon Panetta just got uglier. What started in May with Ms. Pelosi claiming the CIA lied to Congress about whether enhanced interrogation techniques has evolved into seven other House Democrats claiming that the intelligence agency has been concealing information and misleading Congress for at least the past 8 years.
The letter to Mr. Panetta, dated June 26 and posted on Representative Anna Eshoo (D-California)'s web site states,
"Recently you testified that you have determined that top CIA officials have concealed significant actions from all members of Congress, and misled members for a number of years from 2001 to this week." In addition to Ms. Eshoo, the letter is signed by Representatives John Tierney (D-Massachusetts), Mike Thompson (D-California), Rush Holt (D- New Jersey), Alcee Hastings (D-Florida), Adam Smith (D-Washington) and Janice Schakowsky (D-Illinois). After the original accusations in May, Mr. Panetta denied Speaker Pelosi's accusations declaring "contemporaneous records from September 2002 indicate that CIA officers briefed truthfully." (source)
Has Mr. Panetta been caught in a lie or have 7 other Democratic lawmakers aided and abetted the original lie of Speaker Pelosi? The letter on Representative Eshoo's web site mentions no details of what was concealed or how Congress was mislead so it's impossible to research any specifics. Hopefully Mr. Panetta will provide the provable answer in a response to Speaker Pelosi's gang.
