Could Sarah Be The New Oprah?

Sarah Palin's Friday announcement that she will be resigning as Alaska's Governor has prompted much speculation about what her next political move will be. The general consensus among the numerous pundits is that she is freeing herself of the responsibilities of running her state so she can concentrate full time on national issues and raising the ridiculous amount of money necessary for a presidential run in 2012. But along with all the political speculation is the idea that her next step might not be exactly political.

Entertainment Weekly ran a tongue-in-cheek piece this weekend wondering if Ms. Palin's next career will be hosting a television show on Fox News Channel to compete with the liberal Rachel Maddow on MSNBC. (source) I wonder if that joke might be closer to the truth than what the real experts are guessing she'll do.
It's no secret that the line between entertainment and news has been seriously blurred in the last decade or so. Appearances on late night comedy shows and daytime talk shows, seen in the past as undignified for a serious political candidate, are now a required part of campaigning and the only way to reach large segments of the electorate.
Then there is the power that celebrity hosts wield in shaping public opinion on everything from what dish soap to buy to what books to read to who to vote for. A passing mention can be worth millions.
And speaking of millions, what quicker way to pay off the debt Governor Palin incurred defending herself against all those frivolous but costly ethics accusations than to earn more money in the talk show world than she could ever hope to make giving political speeches or writing books.
And then there is the best reason of all she should consider becoming the conservative Oprah - her personality, style and intellect would provide the American people with a true picture of what conservatives stand for and who Republicans are. I can't think of a better representative of "the brand". Instead of letting Hollywood and New York define us, the viewing audience would see the truth and be able to make more informed decisions on who they want shaping their opinions and running their government.
Sounds like "Must See TV" to me!
