Arlen Specter's Timing Is Everything

The media's reaction to Senator Arlen Specter's switch to the Democratic party reminds me of the birthday boy who knows about the surprise party in advance. While many TV pundits act as if Specter's defection was the political shock of the century, anyone who's paid any attention to his voting record knows

that he consistantly puts his own political ambition above the people who elected him. After 30 years of being supported by the Republican party, it's contributors and it's volunteers; he decided his ideology has shifted at exactly the same moment he realized he wasn't going to beat conservative Pat Toomey for the party's 2010 nomination. What a coincidence, huh?
Personally I'm glad to see that he is now on the other side of the aisle becaise, as the real Democrats will soon learn, Senator Specter isn't on your side even when he's on your side. Someone who can go from publicly stating he will not switch parties to switching parties in just 6 weeks is not the kind of person I want in my party or representing my state.
So while the mainstream media may go on about this shocking loss to the GOP, many in the GOP are more then glad to be rid of him and are continuing to put our energy into Pat Toomey's campaign.
