There are still no better words to remind us of the significance and the sanctity of Memorial Day than these by our 40th president:
Once each May, amid the quiet hills and rolling lanes and breeze-brushed trees of Arlington National Cemetery, far above the majestic Potomac and the monuments and memorials of our Nation's Capital just beyond, the graves of America's military dead are decorated with the beautiful flag that in life these brave souls followed and loved.

And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city. Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

Today we remember our defenders past and present. While we should do so every day of the year, we sometimes get too busy leading the kind of lives that their service has made possible. We offer heartfelt thanks today for their efforts and sacrifices and prayers for the safety of those currently serving.

In the final days of a long, grueling campaign things can get ugly. In President Barack Obama's current re-election campaign, things started out ugly and have devolved into a steaming pile of nationally embarrassing desperation. As our Candidate-in-Chief says whatever he can think of to save his own career, the latest and hopefully final example was his response to a crowd that booed at the mere mention of Governor Mitt Romney's name. "Voting is the best revenge," said the president.
